Joseph Thomas Riden was born 1848. He died 1880. He was the son of James Riden (1792-0) and Suckie Ridinghorse (1812-?). His siblings were Thomas Riden (1829-?), Charity Riden (1835-?), James Riden (1838-?), John Riden (1840-?), Francis Riden (1842-?), Susannah Riden (1845-?).

Joseph Thomas Riden's wife was Martha Jane Eaton (1850-1898). They were married 1 AUG 1867 in McMinn County, Tennessee. They had five known children named Jessie Albert Riden (1877-1956), James A. Riden, William Thomas Riden, George E. Riden, and Samuel Andrew Riden.

Joseph Thomas Riden was a moon shiner who worked under the pretext of being a fox hunter. His corn whisky, the stongest made in McMinn County, was used by the residents of the South Liberty and Claxton communities for medicinal purposes. He died of consumption at age 32
